How Do You Apply For A Social Security Card After A Home Birth?
I’m having a home birth & I already have the form to fill out for a birth certificate, but how do I apply for a social security card for my daughter once she’s born? Is that included with the birth certificate or do I need to do something extra?

You can get an application from the social security’s website, but then you’ll have to wait until you have the birth certificate, and I think you have to take it into an office. I have heaqrd that it’s a royal pain in the **** if you don’t do it at a hospital when you do the birth certificate, unfortuantely. But congratulations and good luck!

You just send in the birth certificate with an printed out online application. I had get an on line application.
PS if it says anything like you can get your social security card here at this site for ___ amount, then it is a scam you can not print out your social security card and you are not required to pay for it is free. The web site I used was: http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber.com

Good luck with your birth! We had a home birth with our baby and it was a great experience. In our case, our midwife brought over the forms for the birth certificate and SS card during one of her visits to our home during the week after the birth. She sent them in for us. I do think it was two separate forms.

Talk to your midwife. She may be able to help you through the process. I remember ours filed for the birth certificate for us and I *think* I remember her asking us if we wanted a SS card as well. It may be a different form, but she can probably help you.

Congratulations! Our midwife brought the form over during one of her home visits after the birth. It might have even been on the birth certificate form. You should ask your midwife how she handles it.
